What We Believe

Mt. Calvary Baptist Church is a Southern Baptist Church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. We adhere to the doctrinal statement as published in the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. These doctrinal truths include the following core beliefs:

  • The Deity of Jesus Christ
  • The Substitutional Death of Jesus
  • The Bodily Resurrection of Jesus from the Grave
  • Salvation by Faith Alone Through Grace Alone
  • Inerrancy and Completeness of Scripture
  • The Sinfulness of Man
  • The Virgin Birth of Jesus
  • The Triune Existence of God
  • Eternal Security of the Believer
  • God’s Judgement of Man for Sin
  • Eternal Damnation for People who Reject Christ
  • Imminent Return of Christ to the Earth

In addition to these core beliefs, we desire to pursue the following Core Values:

Worship God
“For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” PHILIPPIANS 2:9-11

Value People
“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you.” JOHN 15:12–14

Live the Scriptures
“But prove yourselves doers of the Word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.” JAMES 1:22-24

Steward Faithfully
“‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.’” MALACHI 3:10

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” MATTHEW 6:33

Lead By Example
“If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.”JOHN 13:14-15“Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.” PHILIPPIANS 3:17

Church Membership

How do I join Mt. Calvary Baptist Church as a member?

At the close of each service, we extend an invitation for people to come forward to receive prayer, counseling, or information about joining our church. At that time, our counselors can assist you and gather any necessary information. As a general rule, you can unite withMt. Calvary Baptist Church in one of the following ways:
  • A profession of faith in Jesus Christ, followed by Scriptural baptism
  • Affirmation of faith in Jesus Christ, followed by Scriptural baptism
  • Statement of faith in Jesus Christ and Scriptural baptism
  • Transferring membership from another Baptist church of like faith

Why is church membership so important?

Research indicates that formal church membership increases a person’s commitment to Christ by three and a half times. More importantly, the Bible encourages believers to “join” their lives to a local body of believers. In addition, Christians are commanded to submit to local church leaders for spiritual protection and to serve one another. This only happens in the context of a common commitment to a local assembly of believers. Membership is not really about you, but rather it is about us! Consider the following verses:

Baptism

Why do we baptize?

To follow the example of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” MATTHEW 3:16-17

To follow the command of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” MATTHEW 28:19-20

To give public testimony of “who” you are and “whose” you are.
Baptism is a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As you are standing in the water, it provides a picture of His life. As you are lowered into the water, it symbolizes His death. His resurrection from the dead is beautifully illustrated as you are raised up from the water.

There is also another picture portrayed during baptism! While standing in the water, you represent your old life before Christ. As you are placed below the water, you will identify with Christ’s sacrifice, death, and burial to purchase your salvation. When you are brought out of the water, you are raised to walk a new life with Christ as His disciple!

When do we baptize?

A person should be baptized after placing their faith in the Lord for salvation.
But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike. ACTS 8:12

In Acts 2:41, God’s Word was preached, Three thousand believed on Jesus, and they were immediately baptized in obedience to Him and His command.
So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. ACTS 2:41

How do we baptize?

Baptism comes from the word, baptizois, which means to “dip completely.”

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; MARK 1:9-10

And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. ACTS 8:38-39
